Dwight Howard, one of the most dominant centers of his generation, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. The announcement comes amid ongoing personal challenges, including family issues and a pending divorce from his wife, Amber Rose Howard.

The eight-time NBA All-Star shared the news with fans through a lengthy post on the social media platform X. In the emotional message, the 40-year-old reflected on his career, personal struggles, and his desire to shift focus toward family and community work.

“Woke up today on the 12th of this month, and I figured it’s time to move on from Superman!” Howard wrote, referencing the famous “Superman” nickname he earned during his playing days. He added that despite the tough public scrutiny he has faced over the years, he has continued to remain positive.

“I'm no superhuman… I cry! I struggle! I feel like everyone else,” he wrote. “Through the lies, the media, and the hate I still show love and smile through the storm.”

Howard explained that the decision to retire was not an easy one. Although he had already spent two decades playing professional basketball, he admitted he once hoped to continue playing even longer. Seeing other players remain active at age 40 inspired him to try to extend his career.

However, he now believes it is time to step away from the game and focus on new priorities.

“But now I'm taking off the cape and retiring from all basketball to pour into my family and give back to communities worldwide,” he wrote. “I know some of you might think I already retired, but I didn’t… the game retired me! I still had more left to give.”

Howard’s career has been widely celebrated for its achievements and longevity. In 2025, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his remarkable impact on the sport.

He was originally selected as the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, launching a career that spanned 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association.

Howard began his NBA journey with the Orlando Magic, where he played eight seasons and became the face of the franchise. During his time in Orlando, he developed into one of the league’s most dominant defensive players and an elite rebounder. His athleticism and shot-blocking ability made him one of the most feared centers in the league.

After leaving Orlando, Howard played for several teams across the league. He had stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, and Washington Wizards.

One of the highlights of his later career came during his return to the Lakers in 2019. Howard played an important supporting role when the team captured the 2020 NBA Finals, securing his first and only NBA championship during the COVID-19 “bubble” season.

After his NBA career slowed down, Howard continued playing internationally for a season in Taiwan, showing his enduring love for the game before ultimately deciding to end his playing days.

Beyond his accomplishments on the court, Howard earned several prestigious honors throughout his career. He was named an NBA All-Star eight times and won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award three times, further cementing his legacy as one of the best defensive centers in basketball history.

However, the retirement announcement also comes during a difficult personal period for the former star. In recent weeks, reports indicate that authorities were called to his home in Suwanee, Georgia, multiple times between March 5 and March 7. The incidents reportedly involved a suicide threat, a domestic situation, and a theft report.

Shortly after Howard filed for divorce on March 9, Amber Rose Howard also filed for divorce. The couple had been married for about 14 months. According to reports first published by TMZ, Amber Rose had previously filed for divorce last summer before the couple later reconciled.

Despite the personal challenges surrounding him, Howard indicated that he wants to use the next phase of his life to support his family and give back to communities around the world. He also expressed hope that he can help inspire and mentor the next generation of basketball players.

With a career that includes two decades of professional basketball, numerous awards, and an NBA championship, Dwight Howard leaves the game as one of the most recognizable and accomplished big men of his era.
