Trump says Iran drone revenge threat to California is under investigation
President Donald Trump addressed growing concerns about potential Iranian sleeper cells inside the United States and reports of a possible revenge plot involving a drone attack targeting California. The comments come amid heightened tensions following the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which has sparked warnings from intelligence officials about possible retaliatory actions.
Authorities became alarmed after encrypted communications believed to have originated in Iran were intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies. According to officials familiar with the situation, the messages were interpreted as a possible “operational trigger” intended to activate sleeper assets already positioned outside the country. The communications reportedly surfaced on Monday and prompted a series of alerts across federal and state law enforcement agencies.
The possibility of sleeper cells—individuals who quietly reside within a country while awaiting instructions from foreign handlers—has raised concerns among security officials. While investigators have not confirmed the existence of any specific network tied to the messages, the communications were considered serious enough to trigger a federal response and increased monitoring of potential threats.
In response to the intelligence warning, the FBI issued an alert to law enforcement agencies in California about a potential drone attack along the West Coast. According to the notice, Iranian operatives could attempt to launch unmanned aerial vehicles from a vessel located off the U.S. coastline.
The alert, which was obtained by ABC News, stated that Iran allegedly intended to conduct a surprise drone strike against targets in California if the United States carried out military strikes against Iran. The warning indicated that the drones could be launched from an unidentified vessel positioned offshore, allowing attackers to remain outside U.S. territory while carrying out the operation.
Despite the seriousness of the warning, investigators emphasized that many details remain unknown. The FBI noted that officials do not yet have information about the timing, method, specific targets, or individuals who might be involved in such an operation. As a result, the alert serves primarily as a precaution intended to ensure that local authorities remain vigilant.
President Trump addressed the situation while speaking to reporters upon arriving at Joint Base Andrews after a rally-style event in Kentucky. When asked about the potential drone threat and sleeper cell concerns, he confirmed that federal authorities are investigating the matter.
“It’s being investigated,” Trump said. “You have a lot of things happening, and all we can do is take them as they come.”
Although the president did not provide additional details about the intelligence reports, he suggested that security agencies were actively monitoring potential threats and working to determine whether the warning represents a credible risk.
Trump also used the moment to criticize the immigration policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden, arguing that relaxed border policies could have allowed hostile actors to enter the United States. The president described Biden as “the worst president in the history of our country” and claimed that some of the individuals potentially linked to sleeper networks may have entered during the previous administration.
“I have been briefed, and a lot of people came in through Biden with his stupid open border,” Trump said. He added that authorities were tracking potential suspects, stating that officials believe they know the whereabouts of many individuals who could pose a risk.
“We know where most of them are,” he said. “We’ve got our eye on all of them, I think.”
The president also defended the U.S. military campaign against Iran, arguing that the operation has significantly weakened the country’s military capabilities. Trump claimed that American forces have already inflicted major damage on Iranian assets.
“Iran is being absolutely decimated,” he said. “We’ve knocked out all of their boats. I think we’re in very good shape.”
Trump framed the conflict as a demonstration of American strength and suggested that the military pressure on Iran is working. However, the intelligence warnings about possible retaliation underscore the ongoing risks associated with the confrontation.
In addition to criticizing Biden, Trump also directed blame at Democrats in Congress for what he described as a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. The president specifically pointed to Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, accusing him and other Democrats of blocking government operations that he claims are necessary to respond to security threats.
According to Trump, the funding dispute has disrupted parts of the federal security apparatus responsible for investigating threats like the suspected Iranian drone plot.
“One of the things we have to do is get the Democrats to stop the Democrat shutdown,” Trump told reporters. “Because, as you know, the apparatus that looks into that—Schumer and the Democrats have shut it down.”
The president argued that the political standoff is hindering the administration’s ability to fully address potential dangers facing the country. He suggested that the disagreement reflects a broader divide over national security priorities in Washington.
Trump went even further, claiming that the actions of Democratic lawmakers demonstrate hostility toward the United States. “It shows that they probably hate our country a lot,” he said.
Despite the political rhetoric, law enforcement agencies continue to focus on assessing the credibility of the threat. Officials say investigations are ongoing and emphasize that warnings like the FBI alert are often issued out of caution when intelligence signals a potential risk.
For now, authorities have not confirmed any imminent attack or identified specific individuals linked to the alleged plot. However, federal and state agencies remain on heightened alert as they work to determine whether the intercepted communications represent a genuine operational plan or simply routine messaging.
Security officials say the situation highlights the complex challenges involved in monitoring foreign threats, particularly those involving modern technologies such as drones and encrypted communications. As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies across the country are being urged to remain vigilant while intelligence analysts attempt to verify the scope and seriousness of the warning.
